The eagerly anticipated Gloucester Dragon Boat Festival is back at Gloucester Docks this May 2026, promising an exhilarating day out by the water.
What to expect from Gloucester Dragon Boat Race 2026
Watch on in amazement as crews of rowers climb into 30-foot canoe boats fitted with colourful dragon heads, with around 30 teams vying for victory – and the coveted Dragon Boat Challenge Shield!
Inspired by the tradition that originated in China over 2,000 years ago, the racing spectacle is a firm favourite in Gloucestershire with hundreds of spectators cheering on the competitors as they race along the River Severn.
Starting beneath the swing bridge on Llanthony Road, the boats tear through Gloucester Docks basin for around 300 metres, before finishing at Merchants Quay.
With an electric atmosphere and commentary from the organisers, spectators are encouraged to make lots of noise to spur on the rowers.
Organised by Rotary Club of Gloucester Severn, this year's event is raising money for Rotary supported charities, including Young Gloucestershire and Pier Piper Appeal.
